• Clean your heads?..
• Make sure you are using the right kind of tape.
• Could be a faulty tape transport mechanism tape path is not getting aligned. Regular maintenance & adjustment is critical. Pay attention to the degradation of the rubber on the pinch roller, which grips and pulls the tape during transport. This rubber should be replaced at regular intervals.
  
  
  
  
  
• If it's old enough to be out of warranty, there may be a part failure, like a spring or clutch in the camcorder itself. Unless you can see something obvious (like a foreign object - kids you know) there's not much you can do on your own. I would pass it to Sony.
