Some say after recording on a mini-dv tape more than 5 times, the tape is done.
Rule of thumb:
Professional video production/jobs- always use new tape.
Shooting free jobs/testing- re-use tape.
Simply put- unless you like drop-outs, you should use high-quality virgin tape on each shoot...unless you're taping your dog doing tricks.
You should also get in the habit of checking your capstan roller in your camera. When it becomes shiny, it's time to replace it.
