Boost local SEO using video on your Google Business Profile

Enhancing Local SEO with Video on Your Google Business Profile

Adding video to your Google Business Profile is a powerful way to boost engagement, elevate your company’s presence in Google search results, and attract more customers to your business.

Curious about what types of videos you should create and how to upload them to your Google Business Profile? You’re in the right place. Let’s explore!

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile, formerly known as Google My Business, is a tool that allows you to create a local listing for your business on Google, provided you can verify that your business operates at the specified location.

Once your profile is set up, your business will appear on Google Maps, in local search results, and across other Google platforms. Your listing allows customers to leave reviews, upload photos and videos, and access key details like your business hours, address, and contact information.

You can create separate listings for each physical location of your business, such as different stores or offices. However, listings for P.O. boxes or proxy addresses aren’t allowed—you need to have a physical location that customers can visit.

Video Specifications for Google Business Profile

Before you upload a video, make sure it meets Google’s specifications:

  • Duration: Up to 30 seconds
  • File size: Up to 75 MB
  • Resolution: Minimum of 1280×720

The 30-second limit might seem tight, but it encourages you to focus on creating concise, impactful content. Below, we’ll cover the best types of videos to include in your profile.

Additionally, Google has specific privacy guidelines for video content. If you plan to upload a video you don’t own, make sure you have the owner’s written or verbal permission.

How to Upload a Video to Your Google Business Profile

There are two ways to add a video to your profile:

Option 1: Via Your Business Profile Dashboard

  1. Log in to your Google Business account.
  2. From the dashboard, go to “Photos.”
  3. Select “Add videos.”
  4. Choose the video file from your computer.

Once uploaded, your video will be visible to anyone who views your profile. Some videos might require further review by Google, in which case you’ll be notified.

Option 2: Directly from Google Search

  1. Ensure you’re logged in to your Business Profile.
  2. Search for your business’s name in the Google search bar.
  3. In the mini dashboard that appears, click “Promote.”
  4. Select “Photo.”
  5. Choose the video file from your computer.

How to Feature Your Video

To give your video extra visibility, consider adding it to a post. Without this step, your video will be grouped with other media in your library. Posts are ideal for temporary highlights, like promotions or sales.

To create a post:

  1. Go to your Google Business Profile dashboard.
  2. Select “Posts” from the menu or click “Create post.”
  3. Choose the post type (Offer, What’s New, Event, Product).
  4. Add your video.
  5. Hit “Publish.”

Posts are archived after six months unless you choose otherwise, and Google provides insights so you can track how well your video posts perform.

The Best Types of Videos for Your Google Business Profile

Here are three video types that work particularly well:

  1. Quick Tour: Perfect for retail businesses or offices, a short video tour shows customers what your location looks like and how to find it.
  2. About Us: Showcase your company’s culture and expertise with an “About Us” video, ideal for service-oriented businesses.
  3. Offering Summary: Combine elements of a tour and an about us video to highlight both your space and your services, especially suited for cafes, restaurants, and similar establishments.

For larger businesses, a 30-second ad currently running on TV or other media can also be uploaded to your profile to reach new local search visitors.
