Enter Video Contests

Sell Stock Footage

Many websites are in the business of reselling stock footage, typically on a commission basis. People buy stock footage to use in news broadcasts, in their own videos, or even to practice motion graphics effects. You can shoot anything – the sky, the ocean, your dog reading your calculus book even the footage you shot for one of the filmmaker networks mentioned above – and see if someone out there wants to buy it!

MotionDrops

Splits stock footage sales with videographers (called “producers”) 50/50. Their non-exclusive licensing agreement means you can sell the same clips on their site that you’re selling elsewhere, maximizing your potential profit.

To start selling on MotionDrops, create an account and upload your current clips. You can upload individual clips or create collections that you sell as a group. They must approve your footage before it makes it into the marketplace, but they’re pretty fast about it.

iStockVideo

In addition to making money on your footage, iStockVideo gives you access to a forum full of videographers and membership in their A/V Club. They also have an annual iStockalypse event where you can get together with fellow videographers in your city or town.

iStockVideo gives you 40% commission on exclusive video clips, and 20% on non-exclusive clips. To sell your footage there, signup for a free account, take a quick quiz (no sweat!), and upload your three best samples for their approval.

Use Search tools

There are dozens of free tools like Craiglook, Crazedlist and Searchtempest to help you find work. Simply use the search term “videographer, massachusetts” or “videographer arizona” to find a request in your area. You will likely find a request to shoot kids’ birthday parties, local band concerts, high school football games, or even houses and apartments for sale — there are tons of places for you k to earn some cash behind the camera. You can also post an ad yourself to start spreading the word – even ask your family, friends, and friends’ families if they need anything videotaped.

Use a Freelance Job Board

Finding freelance work is the key to self employment success, as it’s generally easier to find freelance opportunities than permanent employment. Freelance gives professionals that chance to submit projects and work on their own terms and in their own time – most of the time. Some companies and employers will hire freelancers to get the job done, and then there will be more strict deadlines and guidelines to follow.

There are also several job boards that have listings for freelance video projects. These work pretty much the same way as Getafreelancer.com and Rentacoder.com. The difference is that you pay a flat out membership fee. While the initial fee may seem high, if you get a lot of work from the site, it could be worth it.

Here are some of the more popular sites that people use. Also, Getafreelancer.com has a Gold Membership. If you pay for the Gold Membership they won’t take a commission.

Ifreelance.com
Guru.com
Elance

Here’s the big difference between freelance professionals and others: freelancers find their own gigs. The online market is full of them, and the jobs abound. Unfortunately, so do the freelancers out there looking for work. It’s a competitive market, but successful self employment often hinges on the ability to find work in the freelance market.
